FDU’s Gene Barnett Speaker Series will feature critically acclaimed historical novelist and poet, Paula McLain on October 27

Teaneck, NJ (October 17, 2016) – On Thursday, October 27, 2016, historical novelist Paula McLain will speak on “Creating Fiction from Real–life Characters” at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s bi-annual Gene Barnett Speaker Series.

Paula McLain

McLain’s first bestselling historical novel, The Paris Wife has been a publishing phenomenon with more than 1.5 million copies in print.  Written in the voice of Ernest Hemingway’s first wife, Hadley Richardson, it paints a complex portrait of Hemingway and the bohemian world of 1920’s Paris, which includes such literary figures as F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Joyce, Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein.

Also, McLain published Circling the Sun, the story of the pioneering horse trainer, adventures and aviator, Beryl Markham. She was one of the first people in Africa and the world to have a commercial pilot’s license and the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic.

Author of two collections of poetry, a memoir, Like Family: Growing Up in Other People’s Houses; and a first novel, A Ticket to Ride.

Born in Fresno, California, McLain received an MFA in poetry from the University of Michigan and has been awarded a fellowship from Yaddo, the MacDowell Colony and the National Endowment of the Arts.

The lecture will be held at 8 p.m., on Thursday, October 27, in the Wilson Auditorium, Dickinson Hall, Metropolitan Campus. Copies of McLain’s books will be available for signing after the Q&A session.

The evening is open to the general public with tickets at $10 per person. Tickets will be available at the door starting at 7:15 p.m. on the night of the lecture. The event is free to faculty, staff and students with valid FDU IDs. There are no advance ticket sales or reserved seating.
