The Twomblys of Florham

“The Twomblys of Florham: The Beginning and End of an Era,” a conversation with Walter T. Savage, FDU professor emeritus of English, and Arthur T. Vanderbilt II, author, took place on Sunday, March 29, 2009 in an event sponsored by Friends of Florham. Savage passed away in October of that year, so we are fortunate to have this record of his insights.

Mr. Vanderbilt and Professor Savage conversed about Hamilton McKown Twombly and Florence Vanderbilt Twombly, the couple's estate, Florham, and their era. The conversation touched on the Vanderbilt-Twombly fortune, family and social life on the estate, as well as the architects, landscapers and decorators who built the estate.

The conversation concluded with the last days of Florham, the auction of the contents of the estate, its transformation into a college campus, and the preservation and restoration efforts of the Friends of Florham. Carol Bere, a Friends of Florham board member, moderated the event.
