Title: Navigating and Implementing the New K-8 Common Core State Standards for Mathematics Workshop
Location: Ridgedale Middle School, Florham Park, NJ
Summary of Activities
The workshop was attended by twenty-two teachers. The participating teachers were from Bernards Township, East Hanover, Florham Park, Franklin Township, Hanover Park, and Somerville school districts. Three participants took the workshop for graduate credit (MATH 6512) and nineteen participants took the workshop for professional development credit.
Professor Dan Aronoff (SOE), Dr. Mark Farag (GHSCSE), and Dr. Shane V. Smith (SOE) facilitated sessions during the workshop. Dr. Kiron Sharma (Math, CS, & Physics) attended the morning sessions. Topics covered included Introduction to Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, Problem Solving Skills, Mathematical Applications of Google Earth, Pattern/Formula Recognition and Proof, Whole Number Operations and Estimations, Fractions and Decimals, Relationship of Basic Geometry and well-known Algebra Formulas, Historical Discussion of Algebra, Algebra Activities, and Geometry Activities. Verbal feedback from participants about the workshop was very positive.
Title: Teaching High School Algebra using the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics Workshop
Location: Cliffside Park High School, Cliffside Park, NJ
Summary of Activities:
The workshop was attended by high school algebra teachers, high school special education algebra teacher, high school geometry teachers, and as well as 7th-8th grade pre-algebra/algebra teachers. Professor Dan Aronoff (SOE) and Professor Yuliana Teper (Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Physics) facilitated sessions of the workshop. Topics covered included an introduction to Common Core State Standards for High School Algebra, problem solving skills, PARCC assessment, and hands-on activities to learn about linear functions.
