The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program in Information Technology (IT) offers an interdisciplinary curriculum focusing on Information Technology and Computer Science. In addition, the program is unique in that it merges traditional academic topics with leading edge and current IT practices and technology.

The overarching goal of the program is to prepare students with broad, integrated IT knowledge including communications, computer networking, computer-based systems, database management, software development, website development, digital media and electronic publishing. Students learn how to evaluate current and emerging technologies; identify user needs; design user-friendly interfaces; apply, configure and manage technologies; and assess the impact of technologies on individuals, organizations and society.

These courses provide students with the competencies necessary to plan, customize and manage secure network and operating system configurations for optimum business applications and plan, design and maintain professional quality websites and internet applications for e-commerce and other business applications. These courses may  also lead to certification in IT fields such as CompTIA A+, Network+ and Security+, and they may provide practicum experiences to qualified students. In addition, certification exam vouchers are provided as part of the program.

Graduates of Fairleigh Dickinson University's B.S. in Information Technology program are qualified IT professionals who are prepared for careers in a wide-range of IT-related areas, as follows:

The Vancouver Campus is a member of CompTIA's "Education to Career" program. Graduates of FDU-Vancouver's B.S. in Information Technology program are encouraged to complete IT certification exams as part of their program, ensuring that they are "market-ready" when they graduate.

Certificate Programs

Students who wish to complete a certificate program in Network and Systems Administration and Web Technology may do so outside the B.S. in Information Technology program as long as they are eligible and have completed the necessary prerequisite courses in information technology. Each certificate program is comprised of 18 credits of course work. In addition, a certificate program in Information Technology is available to eligible students.

The Gildart Haase School of Computer Sciences and Engineering offers examination vouchers for IT certifications in CompTIA A+, Network+ and Security+ as part of its programs. Degree and non-degree students may earn such vouchers.

Career Opportunities

Information technology (IT) is credited with being a major factor in increased productivity and the driving force behind the global economy. There is a great demand for IT professionals in North America ensuring graduates strong employment opportunities following successful completion of the program.

The Canadian Software Human Resource Council reports that the IT workforce in Canada is 600,000 strong and growing, with British Columbia enjoying phenomenal growth in the high-tech computing sector. "Over the past several years, BC's tech industry has led the entire country in employment growth. Today, despite the current economic challenges, we continue to see growth in the tech sector with the most recent statistics showing 6% growth between August 2008 and July 2009," said Cindy Pearson, COO of the BC Technology Industry Association (BCTIA), as cited in Also, according to Salary Wizard Canada of, a typical Web Designer working in Vancouver, British Columbia, earns a median base salary of $65,517, as reported by corporate HR departments in September 2009.

The US Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics projects an 18-27 percent growth in the workforce in areas such as computer support specialists and system administrators between 2004 and 2014. Moreover, IT professionals have consistently earned salaries much higher than the US national mean salary for all occupations, which was $42,270 for the year 2008, as reported in the Occupational Employment Statistics Report, May 2008, of the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. A salary listing website,, listed the US national average salary for Web Developers at $80,473, for Database Administrators at $90,173, and for UNIX Administrators at $86,967, as of September 2009.

Vancouver's proximity to Seattle and the Silicon Valley, which are home to a great number of IT companies including Microsoft, Electronic Arts and Cisco Systems to mention a few, gives its students another great advantage in terms of pursuing their career goals in IT.

The main objective of the B.S. in Information Technology is to produce graduates who:

1.   Have a technical and basic business education with an appropriate combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, which will enable them to enter into and advance in the profession of information technology, management information systems, and business administration.

2.   Possess the necessary foundation to continue their formal education and obtain advanced degrees in information technology, management information systems, business administration, or other related fields.

3.   Can engage effectively in oral, written, and graphical communications and are comfortable in both interpersonal and public settings.

4.   Have the knowledge and skills that enable them to participate in life-long learning and to adapt to an ever-changing, global technological and business environment.

5.   Have a well-rounded education that enables them to conduct themselves as responsible professionals and global citizens who are aware of ethical issues and societal needs and problems.

The program objectives define the skills, knowledge, and attributes that graduates are expected to possess three to four years following graduation, and they fulfill the needs of our several University constituencies, including alumni, students, the Industrial Advisory Committee, the faculty, and employers. These objectives are consistent with the mission of Fairleigh Dickinson University “to educate and prepare students as world citizens through global education.”

Upon or before graduation, each information technology (IT) graduate will possess the knowledge, skills, abilities, and attributes to:
