President Clinton Leads Illustrious New Jersey Speakers Series

President Bill Clinton, 42nd president of the United States, will join other renowned personalities in the 2017–2018 New Jersey Speakers Series, which will be held at 8 p.m. on select Thursdays at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, N.J.

Also among this year’s roster of distinguished speakers are David Cameron, former prime minister of the United Kingdom; Jeffrey Toobin, Supreme Court expert and legal analyst; Cokie Roberts, Emmy Award-winning journalist and author; Robin Wright, Middle East expert and award-winning journalist; Rick Steves, author, television host and European travel guide; and Paul Nicklen, award-winning National Geographic photographer.

David Cameron — October 12, 2017

David Cameron served as the youngest prime minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from 2010 to 2016. He came to power in 2010 at a moment of economic crisis and with an unprecedented fiscal challenge. Under his leadership, the UK’s economy was transformed — deficit was reduced by more than two-thirds; one million businesses were set-up; a record number of 1,000 extra jobs were created for every day he was prime minister; and Britain became the fastest-growing major advanced economy in the world. Cameron developed a foreign policy in the post-Iraq era that addressed the new challenges of the Arab Spring, as well as a more aggressive Russia, while ensuring that Britain played a role in the global fight against ISIS.

Jeffrey Toobin — November 8, 2017

A high-profile senior analyst for CNN and a staff writer for The New Yorker, Jeffrey Toobin is one of the country’s most esteemed experts on politics, media and the law. He is also the author of critically acclaimed best-sellers The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court and The Oath: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court. His latest best-seller, American Heiress: The Wild Saga of the Kidnapping, Crimes and Trial of Patty Hearst, was released to considerable acclaim in August 2016. Toobin’s book, The Run of His Life: The People vs. O. J. Simpson, was the basis for the acclaimed mini-series on FX, which starred Cuba Gooding, Jr., John Travolta and Sarah Paulson. He is also the author of Too Close to Call: The 36-Day Battle to Decide the 2000 Election, the definitive story of the Bush-Gore presidential recount.

Cokie Roberts — November 30, 2017

Cokie Roberts is a political commentator for ABC News and NPR. In her more than 40 years in broadcasting, she has won countless awards, including three Emmys; has been inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame; and was cited by the American Women in Radio and Television as one of the 50 greatest women in the history of broadcasting. Roberts has also written several New York Times best-sellers, most dealing with the roles of women in U.S. history. Her latest releases include Capital Dames, about women and Washington in the Civil War, and an illustrated children’s book, Ladies of Liberty: The Women Who Shaped Our Nation. Roberts and her husband, Steven, have written two books together: Our Haggadah: Uniting Traditions for Interfaith Families and From This Day Forward. In 2008, the Library of Congress named her a “Living Legend,” one of the very few Americans to have attained that honor.

Robin Wright — February 1, 2018

Robin Wright is a contributing writer to The New Yorker and a joint fellow at the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. She has reported from more than 140 countries on six continents and has covered a dozen wars and several revolutions. She has been a television commentator on morning and evening news programs on ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, CNN and MSNBC. Wright’s most recent book, Rock the Casbah: Rage and Rebellion Across the Islamic World, was selected as the Best Book on International Affairs by the Overseas Press Club. She is the recipient of various awards, including the U.N. Correspondents Gold Medal, the National Magazine Award for reportage from Iran in The New Yorker and the Overseas Press Club Award for “best reporting in any medium requiring exceptional courage and initiative” for coverage of African wars.

Rick Steves — February 22, 2018

Rick Steves is host and writer of the popular public television series “Rick Steves’ Europe” and best-selling author of more than 50 European travel books. He also hosts a weekly public radio program, “Travel with Rick Steves,” an hour-long program featuring guest travel experts, followed by listener call-ins. Steves has also created a series of audio walking tours for museums and neighborhoods in Paris, France; Rome, Florence and Venice, Italy; London, England; and Athens, Greece. His travel skills book, Europe Through the Back Door, was first published in 1980 and is now updated annually, and his Rick Steves Italy is a best-selling international guidebook. Steves tackled a new genre of travel writing with Travel as a Political Act, where he reflects on his own life of travel and how travel can be a significant force for peace and understanding in the world.

Paul Nicklen — March 22, 2018

An advocate for polar and marine biodiversity, Paul Nicklen has spent most of his adult life working in the Arctic and Antarctica. Working as a photographer for National Geographic magazine, he has covered a variety of natural history and conservation issues — from the slaughter of narwhals to the environmental impact of salmon farming to the importance of sea ice and polar ecosystems. His book, Polar Obsession, is a pictorial celebration of the polar ecosystems where Nicklen has spent his life. His unique style of storytelling blends the ethereal beauty of the icy realm and the mysteries of some of the most elusive polar creatures. Nicklen has received more than 20 international awards, including Nature: First Prize Story award from World Press Photo and the Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

President Bill Clinton — April 12, 2018

As the first Democratic president in six decades to be elected twice, President Bill Clinton led the U.S. to the longest economic expansion in American history, including the creation of more than 22 million jobs. After leaving the White House, he established the Clinton Foundation to continue working on the causes he cared about. The foundation has endeavored to help build more resilient communities by developing and implementing programs that improve people’s health, strengthen local economies and protect the environment. In addition to his Foundation work, President Clinton served as the top United Nations envoy for the Indian Ocean tsunami recovery effort, the UN Special Envoy to Haiti — and has partnered numerous times with Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush to support relief efforts for communities devastated by natural disasters.
