Devils Women’s Basketball Wins MAC Championship
The Devils women’s basketball team defeated the DeSales Bulldogs, 68-62, to win the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Championship on February 25 at the Ferguson Recreation Center, Florham Campus.
The victory marks the Devils fifth consecutive MAC Freedom championship title — making conference history. Winning the MAC championship earned the Devils an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
The FDU women’s basketball team will be hosting the NCAA First and Second Rounds beginning on Friday, March 3. The Devils will play Gwynedd Mercy in the second game on Friday evening, while Messiah and Babson will battle in the first game at a time to be decided. The two winners will advance to the Second Round on Saturday, March 4, also being played at the Ferguson Recreation Center.
Co-captain Rachel Groom was named Most Valuable Player in the MAC Freedom Championship game, with 18 points, 10 rebounds and three steals. The team, which went 24-3 this season, is led by Marc Mitchell, head coach, who has chalked up more than 150 victories since he began coaching the Devils in 2008.
