Resume Tips and Samples

A great resume is a work of art.  Frame it!  Be sure there is enough white space to ensure readability.  Use only resume specific paper.

Consistency is Key!  Avoid too much bolding, italics and fonts that are hard to read.  The more consistent you are the more appealing your resume will be.  Always check spelling!

What can you do for me?  “Me”, meaning the employer.  Employers need to know “quickly” how you will benefit them – This equals out to results.  This could be in a skill set section or brief profile section.  Try to include results throughout the resume (e.g., “increased sales by 25 %”).

What do you want?  Be specific and truthful in your objective or summary.  Don’t make the employer guess what position you are seeking.  Employers want the right match “fast”.

One page or two?  A novice resume is usually one page.  A two page resume is for the more advanced professional: people in the areas of academia, medicine and senior executives.

Process of Elimination:  Don’t use statements that are too wordy, be concise.  Fillers are not necessary.  Stick to your accomplishments and job responsibilities as they pertain to the position for which you are applying.

Grammar and Format:  No personal pronouns, use different action verbs, no abbreviations, and watch your tenses:  The past is in the past, the present is what you are doing now!

Contact Information:  Your telephone number, e-mail address and home address should all be presented correctly. Telephone numbers – no more than two.  E-mail addresses – should not be offensive to the reader.

Keep personal information to yourself!  Don’t include personal information on the resume (i.e. national origin, age, marital status, sexual orientation, social security number, references, health status)
