WAMFEST 2017 features Sean Astin, Bill Stephney, and student performances

Madison, NJ (October 2, 2017) — Actor Sean Astin will headline Fairleigh Dickinson University’s 2017  WAMFEST at the Florham Campus on October 6. Other presenters include former Def Jam CEO Bill Stephney, musician James Mtumen, poet Michael Robbins, and a exhibit of student performances.

Student arts showcase

 WAMFEST begins with a showcase of artwork and performances by students in Lenfell Hall from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. Students include Matt Cohen, Catherine Cooney, Breyton Croom, Nicole D’Amico, and Abhi Tadakamalla.

Words and Music: The Literary Rythms of the Mind

At 3 p.m. in Hartman Lounge, poet and writer Michael Robbins and Grammy Award-winning R&B musician James Mtume will discuss the role of poetry and music in contemporary culture. Former Def Jam Records CEO Bill Stephney will moderate.

A conversation with Sean Astin

Noted film actor, Sean Astin, will give an intimate talk in the Italian Gardens at 7:30 p.m. with Anthony Tasso, associate professor of psychology. Known for his roles as Samwise Gamgee in Lord of the Rings, Mikey Walsh in The Goonies, and the title character in Rudy, Astin will discuss his acting career, his advocacy work for mental health awareness, and his life growing up with two famous Hollywood parents—Patty Duke and John Astin.

 WAMFEST is an annual series of readings, interviews, talks and performances hosted by Fairleigh Dickinson University. It brings successful artists of various art genres to the campus to inspire and inform students and the community. Past guests have included Bruce Springsteen, Robert Pinsky, Roseanne Cash, Eugene Mirman, Jonathan Demme, Talib Kweli, Mark Morris and Neil Gaiman. All the events are free and open to the public.
