WFDU boosts signal strength to reach new listening areas
Teaneck, N.J. (November 30, 2015) — WFDU, operating at 89.1 FM, recently strengthened its transmissions signal, tripling its listening area, and bringing the station to radios in more than a dozen counties in the New York City Metro area.
WFDU is a radio station known for its eclectic programming, offering a potpourri of different music blocks with shows ranging from pop oldies and classic country to doo wop, salsa, gospel, blues, etc. The station’s most popular shows include “The Group Harmony Alley,” “Sounds of Blue”, and “Let There Be Country.” Please see the program list for detailed information about the shows being offered.
The radio station recently installed a new transmitter, giving the station a five-fold boost in power. “We have tripled our listening area and are getting reports of reception all over Long Island, all five NYC boroughs, most of northern N.J., and as far north as Wappinger Falls, N.Y.,” said Duff Sheffield, program director and general manager at WFDU.
Earlier this year, the station was added to the iHeartRadio app, and began broadcasting programming on three digital radio channels. “We are broadcasting in HD with all three music channels;‘HD1 — The Essential WFDU,’ ‘HD2 — Jazz & What’s More,’ and ‘HD3 — Masterworks.’ The station is looking forward to increasing our listener base throughout the NYC Metro area by serving them with great public radio,” Sheffield added.
HD radio, which stands for hybrid digital, allows stations to broadcast three digital streams in the same amount of space that traditional analog radio signal requires. WFDU simulcasts the analog signal on HD1, which offers a variety of different music styles. HD3 is designated to classical music, and HD2 features similar programming to HD1 during the week, and jazz music on the weekends.
