FDU’s Gene Barnett Speaker Series will feature best-selling author, Matthew Thomas on October 27

TEANECK, NJ (September 30, 2015) — On Tuesday, October 27, 2015, celebrated novelist Matthew Thomas will speak about “Wordcraft in a Digital Age” at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s bi-annual Gene Barnett Speaker Series.

matthew thomasThomas’ debut novel, "We Are Not Ourselves," a story of three generations of an Irish-American family living in Queens, NY was published in 2014 to outstanding and widespread critical acclaim. Described by "The New York Times Book Review" as “A long, gorgeous epic, full of love and caring …one of the best novels you’ll read this year,” the book was shortlisted for both the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize and the James Tait Black Prize.

Also, "We Are Not Ourselves" was nominated for the Folio Prize and was named as a finalist for the John Gardner Fiction Book Award. It has been on several “best-book” lists: The New York Times’ 100 Notable Books of 2014; The Washington Post’s Top 50 Fiction List for 2014; Entertainment Weekly’s 10 Best Fiction Books of 2014. The rights to the book have been purchased by 4th Estate in Britain and American film producer Scott Rudin.

Born and raised in New York City, Thomas holds a BA from the University of Chicago; an MA from the Writing Seminars at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md; and an MFA from the University of California, Irvine.

The lecture will be held on Tuesday, October 27, at 8 p.m. in the Wilson Auditorium, Dickinson Hall, Metropolitan Campus. Copies of Thomas’ book will be available for sale and signing after the Q & A session.

The evening is open to the general public with tickets at $10 per person. Tickets will be available at the door starting at 7:15 p.m. on the night of the lecture. The event is free to faculty, staff and students with valid FDU IDs. There are no advance ticket sales or reserved seating.
