On March 25, 2015, Ras Baraka, mayor of Newark, N.J., visited Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Florham Campus and spoke with students in FDU’s Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program. After mingling with the students and posing for pictures with them, he addressed a full house in the Orangerie.

He began his presentation with an anecdote about how when he was getting on the train to go to Howard University in Washington, D.C., a friend of his was getting on a bus to go to prison and used this story to discuss the correlations between education and overcoming poverty.

The EOF is a university- and state-sponsored program created in 1969 to ensure meaningful access to higher education for economically and educationally disadvantaged students. The fund assists low-income New Jersey residents who are capable and motivated but lack adequate preparation for college study.
