WAMFEST 2013: The Appalachian Heritage

In the autumn of 2013, WAMFEST was inspired by the work of two important people in Appalachian history: Bascom Lamar Lunsford, a premier collector of Appalachian songs and preserver of Appalachian culture from the early 20th Century, and Joe Lovett, the contemporary pioneering environmental lawyer who has fought to end mountain-top removal coal mining in Appalachia and around the country. Just as Lunsford preserved Appalachian music and culture, so has Lovett worked to protect the Appalachia the environment. The events celebrated those achievements with unique pairings of artists from various genres and generations, to make new contributions to this evolving heritage.
