Conditional Admission & ELS

Students who do not meet FDU's English proficiency requirement may apply for conditional admission.

Conditionally admitted students attend the ELS Language Center located at the Metropolitan Campus and complete the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program Level 112. Students who are conditionally admitted receive an I-20 from the ELS Language Center and a conditional letter of acceptance from Fairleigh Dickinson University.


Conditional admission is available for all bachelor degree programs.



Conditional admission is available for many Master's degree programs. For majors that that require a GMAT or GRE, the applicant must submit a qualifying exam score at the time of application.

Programs that offer conditional admission with no GRE/GMAT submission:

  • MA in Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL)
  • MS in Hospitality Management
  • MPA in Public Administration

Programs that offer conditional admission with deferred test submission:

  • MBA (all concentrations)
  • MHS in Health Science (Gateway to Professional Studies concentration only for F/J visas)
  • MS in Accounting
  • MS in Computer Engineering
  • MS in Computer Science
  • MS in Electrical Engineering
  • MS in Electronic Commerce
  • MS in Management Information Systems
  • MS in Supply Chain Management

Students who are conditionally admitted to these programs can prepare for the GRE or GMAT while attending the ELS Language program. Qualifying GRE or GMAT scores must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the start of the semester.


Admission Requirements

Students apply for Conditional Admission to FDU through the ELS Language Center, which is located on FDU's Metropolitan Contact ELS for more information.

  • Submit a completed ELS application.
  • Submit financial certification for ELS.
  • Pay the $165 application fee (payable to ELS).
  • Submit an FDU application online or by mail.
  • Mail your academic records (ex. transcripts, marksheets, diplomas) to ELS.

    - Academic records must be official or attested copies from all secondary and post-secondary schools attended.
  • Submit a copy of your passport.
  • Submit two (2) letters of recommendation from academic or professional references.
  • Complete a FDU Scholarship Application Form (optional).
  • For applicants seeking an F-1 student visaSubmit an official bank statement and Affidavit of Financial Support if you are seeking an F-1 visa.
    - Bank statements must indicate a balance that will cover your first year of tuition and living expenses.
    - The Affidavit of Support must be in the name of the sponsor on your bank statement. Multiple bank statements require an affidavit from each sponsor. Self-sponsored applicants do not need an affidavit.
    Fall applicants must have financial documents dated after February 1Spring applicants, August 1.
    - Solvency certificates are not acceptable.

    For applicants who are sponsored and seeking an F-1 student visaSubmit an official letter from your government or sponsoring organization detailing that you are the scholarship recipient, the promise of financial support, and the amount of available funding listed in U.S. dollars.

    NOTE: All documents submitted to FDU become the property of the University and cannot be returned.
