Initial Certification

Students must satisfy all core requirements and specific departmental requirements for their liberal arts/science major in order to be eligible for a baccalaureate degree. Students in the QUEST Program must major in a liberal arts/science discipline and will complete 30-31 credits as a concentration in elementary or secondary education. Fifteen of the 30-31 education credits are “dual” credits that count toward the completion of both the BA/BS and the MAT degree. No more than 15 dual credits may be taken as an undergraduate and these are completed during a student’s junior and senior years. A minimum of 120 credits are required to complete a BA/BS degree. Students who are unable to complete the required courses as undergraduates will complete them in year 5, or additional time, if needed. QUEST students who complete 15 graduate credits in their undergraduate program must complete a minimum of an additional 21 graduate credits (total of 36 graduate credits) to earn their Masters degree. All Students enrolled in QUEST must meet at least annually with their QUEST advisor to plan for and review FDU program requirements as well as state certification requirements.  Students who have not taken a biology, hygiene, physiology or substance abuse course must take the State approved Health Examination to fulfill this certification requirement. Prior to Apprenticeship Teaching, a passing score on the Praxis is required.

During year five, students completing the MAT Degree program may choose electives from one area of specialization, (i.e., ESL, special education, instructional technology); or they may chose from a variety of areas from an approved list subject to approval of the advisor. Students specializing in secondary education may choose up to 6 elective credits. Students seeking dual teacher certification should focus their electives in a specific certification area in addition to their area of specialization.

Students admitted to QUEST in their sophomore year will begin their education specialization courses at the graduate level in the second semester of their junior year. Eligibility for graduate courses in education in Years 3 & 4 will be based upon the following criteria: 3.0 cum GPA, competencies demonstrated by portfolio assessments, and recommendation of faculty advisor.

 In order to complete the Master of Arts in Teaching program in 5 years or less, some students may need to take courses in summer and winter sessions in Years 2-5 depending upon their particular program requirements and approval of their QUEST and Liberal Arts/Science advisors.

QUEST students may attend the study abroad program at FDU Wroxton, England in their junior or senior years. Students admitted to QUEST in their sophomore year should plan to attend Wroxton in their senior year unless an appropriate sequence of courses may be planned with the advisor for attendance at Wroxton in their junior year.

Middle School Endorsement: (For those holding elementary certification)

Those individuals desiring to teach on the middle school level (5, 6, 7 and 8) must qualify for elementary school certification with subject matter specialization. In order to do so, the following requirements must be met according to N.J.A.C. 6A:9-92(b)

  1. Hold an elementary school Certificate of Eligibility (CE), Certificate of Eligibility with advanced standing (CEAS) or standard certificate with an elementary school endorsement;
  2. Complete study in the characteristics of young adolescents (e.g., PSYC3305 Adolescent Growth & Development);
  3. Pass the appropriate state test in content area specialization for middle school;
  4. Complete a coherent sequence of courses in , but not limited to, one of the following specializations:
    • 30 credits in a single New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS) subject field;
    • 15 credits in the subject fields of mathematics, science, social studies and language arts/literacy;
    • 15 credits in a single world language.
