Alternate Route

Fairleigh Dickinson University offers two options in our Alternate Route Program for those candidates who are interested in teaching.

Option #1: For those who hold a CE and have obtained employment in a school district.

Admission to the program requires that the candidate has:

  1. A certificate of eligibility (CE) from the New Jersey Department of Education, which requires:
  • A 3.0 undergraduate GPA;
  • Passing score on the CORE Academic Skills Tests (Praxis I) or high SAT scores for exemption;
  • Passing score on the Praxis II exam;
  1. A contract for employment in a school district.

The New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) requires that these candidates have 50 hours of pre-clinical experience before starting their employment as the teacher on-record in the classroom. This requirement may be met by previous experience working with children and/or specific coursework at FDU.  Please see a School of Education advisor to determine if you have met this requirement or what you need to meet it.

The NJDOE also requires 350 hours of coursework and mentoring during the first two years of employment as a teacher in a classroom. In the first two year of teaching, the candidate should take 18 credits of required coursework in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, and receive 80 hours of observation and mentoring by an FDU field supervisor as part of the school-based  professional support team.

Once all NJDOE requirements have been met, the candidate may apply for a standard teaching license after successful two years of teaching.  All candidates must submit an edTPA performance assessment before receiving a standard teaching license.

Option #2:  For those who do not have employment in a school.

FDU offers an alternate route program leading to a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) for those who have experience in a classroom, either as a permanent substitute, a teacher’s aide, or teacher in a private school.

Admission to the program requires that the candidate has:

  • A 3.0 undergraduate GPA;
  • Passing score on the CORE Academic Skills Tests (Praxis I) or high SAT scores for exemption;
  • Passing score on the Praxis II exam.

All teaching candidates are required to take 25 prescribed graduate level credits for certification, including at least 6 credits (90 hours) of coursework as part of their pre-clinical experience. The candidate then enrolls in Practicum, a 6-8 week clinical practice that prepares the teaching candidate in state prescribed studies under the supervision of a master-teacher and clinical supervisor. After completion of the Practicum, a candidate may obtain a paid position for two full years (induction years), complete additional courses, and take Clinical I, Clinical II, Clinical III and Clinical IV. Clinical I and II are taken in the first year and Clinical III and IV are taken in the second year. During Clinical Internships the candidate is observed by a college supervisor who is a member of a school-based professional support team. All candidates must submit and receive a passing score on the edTPA, a state-required performance assessment. Once all requirements and coursework are completed, Fairleigh Dickinson University informs the NJDOE that the candidate has completed all requirements of our approved CE program, and is ready for a standard certificate.

If a candidate cannot obtain employment in a school, the candidate may take a 4-6 week Assistantship, and be eligible to apply for a CEAS, after submitting and receiving a passing score on the edTPA.
