M.A. in Teaching Eng. as a Second Lang. (TESL/TEFL)


The Masters of Arts in Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language (TESL/TEFL) at Fairleigh Dickinson University is designed for (a) international students who want to teach English outside of the United States; and (b) domestic students (i.e., US citizens and legal residents) who desire a masters degree to teach English as a second language but do not wish to pursue New Jersey K-12 teacher certification.

Where are the courses offered?

Courses are offered at the University's Metropolitan Campus in Teaneck, NJ.

If I have taken graduate credits at FDU or at another institution, can they be applied to the MA in TESL/TEFL?

A total of 6 credits with a grade of B or better may be applied if they are relevant to your individual course of study and if they are taken no more than 5 years prior to admission to the MA in TESL/TEFL.

What if I am interested only in the 18-credit ESL Specialist FDU Certificate?

You may take the ESL specialist FDU certificate without obligation to complete the MA degree.

Admission Requirements

International Students:

  1. A bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based) or 79 (Internet-based) or better.
  3. Two letters of recommendation.

Domestic Students

  1. A bachelors degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. Two letters of recommendation.
