Degree Requirements - M.A. in Education for Certified Teachers


The Master of Arts in Education for Certified Teachers (MACT) is a 36-credit program that allows teachers to pursue specializations while attaining their master’s degrees.  Each program is unique in that teachers can graduate with an 18-credit certification in their area of specialization and a 12-credit New Jersey Supervisor license. The areas of specialization that a certified teacher can choose from are:
  • English as a Second Language (ESL) - 18 credit New Jersey State Certification in ESL, as a second certification, plus 12 credit Supervisor License and 6 credits to complete a master's degree; 
  • Instructional Technology Specialist FDU Certificate (ITS) - 18 credit FDU Certificate plus 12 credit Supervisor License and 6 credits to complete a master's degree; 
  • New Jersey Literacy/Reading Specialist & Supervisor Certification(LRS) - 36 credits for New Jersey State Certification, which includes 12 credits for Supervisor License;
  • Dual Program in Literacy/Reading and Multisensory Reading (LRSMR) - 36 credits which includes the 12 credit Orton Gillingham Dyslexia Specialist Certificate, 18 credits for an FDU Literacy/Reading Certificate, plus 6 credits to complete a master's degree. An additional 6 credits will lead to a New Jersey Department of Education Certification as a reading specialist.
  • Professional Studies in Education FDU Certificate (PROST) - selections from generalist options in all MACT programs including all specializations and 12 credit Supervisor's License. Program available for New Jersey Provisional teachers;
  • Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TSD) - 21 credit approved New Jersey Certification in TSD as second certification, plus 6 credits towards the 12 credit Supervisor License and 3 credits to complete the master's degree. There are additional 6 credits to complete the entire Supervisor License.
  • Bilingual/Bicultural Education Specialist (BILCE) - 12 credits towards second New Jersey State Department of Education endorsement plus 12 credit Supervisor License and 12 credits to complete the master's degree.
  • Preschool Grade 3 (P-3) Specialist (PREK) - 13 credits towards second New Jersey State Department of Education endorsement plus 12 credit Supervisor Certificate, and 11 credits to complete the master's degree.

Certified teachers who complete the master's program with the designated approved 12 credits and have three years of successful teaching experience will be eligible to apply for a New Jersey Supervisor License.

The M.A. in Education for Certified Teachers is offered under the auspices of the Peter Sammartino School of Education, University College: Arts • Sciences • Professional Studies, Metropolitan Campus, Teaneck, New Jersey and is available at the Metropolitan Campus; the college at Florham, Madison, New Jersey; selected off-site locations; and selected community colleges. Cohort Groups may be established in school districts with sufficient enrollment and are open to teachers from other districts.
