The Next Generation: Its 8 Biggest Challenges

Is it your intention for the family firm to continue ownership with the next generation? If so, have the senior and junior generations crafted a vision to get there? Based on a holistic approach and over a decade of working with next generation successors, McCann will address the eight most significant challenges facing the next generation of a business owning family. Each of the eight challenges will be discussed, along with examples, consequences of ignoring them and strategies to overcome them.

Radical Collaboration: Improving Internal Communications

Every family business has to make business decisions practically every day. The question is how to do this in a collaborative, harmonious way. Building on the February session, this interactive program will explore the techniques of Radical Collaboration — how we achieve effective, results-oriented communications within the family and the company. Ms. Glendinning will explain and demonstrate this research-verified process of overcoming conflict and resolving problems with an attitude of cooperation that leads to mutual success.

Successor President’s Discussion

Business succession is an issue that affects all family businesses. Some are successful, but many, unfortunately, are not. In a follow-up to our May session, this panel of members of the Forum’s successor generation will discuss their experiences of “taking the reigns” of their family firms. Attendees will gain knowledge on the succession process from an insider’s viewpoint — what has worked, what has not and gain insights which may help their own businesses in the future.

Unforeseen Issues: Tough Topics in Family Business Transition
Thursday, November 15, 2007 • 8:30–11:30 a.m.

Most experts agree that family firms must start their succession planning early so that they can be prepared for all circumstances. By taking proactive steps, the family can explore the many options and decide exactly what needs to be accomplished. Sometimes, because of illness, unexpected death or other unforeseen contingencies, transition must take place earlier than expected. This session will deal with planning, legal and financial instruments that should be in place in every family business — wills, trust, financial plans, buy-sell agreements, etc. — in order to protect the family survivors and the business.

Members will begin to examine their own organizations examining with issues including organizational profile; leadership; strategic planning; customer and market focus; measurement, analysis, and knowledge management; workforce focus; process management; and results. Dr. Waldmann-Williams will lead this discussion and learning, and will give members important tools that can be continued to use to optimize personal and professional performance.
