Financial Aid Process

Fall 2017 & Spring 2018

Applying for financial aid must be done each year. Please follow the steps below.

Step 1: File your Federal Income Tax Return
Complete your 2016 federal income tax return. If you are married and did not file jointly, you need to include your spouse’s income information as well. If you are not required to file a federal tax return, please contact the Office of Financial Aid.

Step 2: Apply for a FSA ID (Federal)
Apply for a FSA ID. This will allow you to sign your FAFSA application electronically. If you already have a FSA ID, you do not need to re-apply for another. Your FSA ID can be used each year to electronically apply for financial aid and to access your records online.

Step 3: Fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Complete the 2017-2018 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.FAFSA.ed.gov. Use the school code 004738 (Farleigh Dickinson University Florham Campus).

PLEASE NOTE QUESTIONS 29, 30 & 47 (Questions are not in numerical order on FAFSA)

Your answers should be as follows:

29:  When you begin the 2017-2018 school year, what will be your grade level?
1st YR. GRADUATE/PROFESSIONAL

30:  When you begin the 2017-2018 school year, what degree or certificate will you be working on?
GRADUATE / PROFESSONAL DEGREE

47:  Working on Masters or Doctorate in 2017-2018?
YES

Step 4: Cost of Attendance (COA)
Review the Cost of Attendance to determine how much aid you may need.

Step 5: Graduate PLUS Loan
Students who are also interested in applying for a Direct Graduate PLUS loan must complete the application at www.studentloans.gov. Sign in under “Manage My Direct Loan” using your FSA ID. On the next page, you will see a link to “Request a Direct PLUS Loan,” follow that link and choose Graduate PLUS at the bottom of the next page. Follow the prompts and enter your information as requested. The Aid Year is 2017-2018. You must authorize the school to use your Direct PLUS Loan to pay for other educationally related charges that you, the student, will incur at the school. The loan period should be from August 2017 to July 2018. Certify that the information you have entered is true and authorize the U.S Department of Education to perform a credit history check to determine eligibility.

Step 6: Entrance Counseling
You must complete entrance counseling before the school can make the first disbursement of your loan. This helps you to understand your responsibilities regarding your loan. Please go to https://studentloans.gov/myDirectLoan/index.action to complete this task.

Make sure to use your FSA ID to log in and select Graduate Student.

Step 7: Sign Electronic Master Promissory Note (eMPN)
You must go to www.studentloans.gov and e-sign, with your PIN, an eMPN for the Direct Unsubsidized Loan. If you are borrowing a Direct Grad PLUS Loan you must e-sign a separate eMPN in addition to the one for your Direct Unsubsidized Loan.

Step 8: Private/Alternative Loan
For Private/Alternative Loan applicants, you must notify the Office of Financial Aid when you apply so we can certify and accept the loan.
