There is often a struggle to maintain a separation between one’s work and personal life, but I believe the balance is worth the struggle. Having been a New York girl all my life, growing up in Brooklyn and completing my undergraduate degree in 1981 from New York City University in psychology and statistics, I became used the fast pace of the City. After graduation, I worked on Wall Street for nine years assisting brokers and financial personnel. Wanting more, I attended Nova University Law Center (now Nova Southeastern University) in Ft. Lauderdale-Davie, Florida where my family had a “snowbird” home. Working for only a short time, my husband, being a military man was transferred to Lakehurst, New Jersey, resulting with Theresa relocating and sitting for the New Jersey Bar. Theresa was admitted to the New Jersey Bar in 1993.

For several years I worked with a Gelzer, Kelahar, Shea, Carr and Novy, which became Shea & Novy. The practice required I litigate a variety of estate matters, prepare various estate planning documents and become proficient in the Medicaid arena. I opened my own firm in 1996, opening a small office in Whiting, New Jersey. I sold that practice in April 2008 and took a ten week trip cross country with my daughter before opening a second independent practice in Toms River. I continue to practice on Plaza Drive, Tom River, New Jersey where I am able to maintain a productive practice and still have a family life.

During and throughout my practice I have always enjoyed teaching and educating the senior communities by being a guest speaker at club houses or holding bi-monthly seminars. I have been teaching elder law issues for more than fifteen years. Now, I have the great opportunity to teach at the Graduate Center of Fairleigh Dickinson University Paralegal Studies Program where I am able to see the profession though new eyes.

The areas of practice remain Estate Planning, included Wills, Trusts, Power of Attorneys, Living Wills, Second Marriage Financial and Estate Planning, Planning with children of Special Needs, Guardianships, Long Term Care and Nursing Home Planning, along with Medicaid applications and some Estate Litigation
