The Labor and Employment Paralegal works under the direction of attorneys in a capacity that involves the performance of substantive legal work; this usually requires sufficient knowledge of legal concepts, and would be performed by the attorney in the absence of the paralegal. This position reports to the Senior Counsel, Labor and Employment – North America.
In this role you will play a key role in the support of a wide variety of actions. Primary responsibilities for the Paralegal include the following:

-Work on a large variety of employment law-related tasks, such as managing subpoenas, drafting settlements, drafting separation agreements, reviewing handbooks and policies, maintaining files, and ensuring proper storage of completed paper files.  May assist with responding to questions from HR or other managers on variety of employee relations, legal and compliance inquiries, which could include issues related to recruitment, hire, policy application, ADA, FMLA, wage-hour, immigration, or workforce reductions and other separations from employment; 

-Enter new employment cases into matter management data base; track new cases in data base; ensure that outside counsel has the LM number and case name in the MDLZ system; act as liaison with HR, local management and outside counsel for individual cases;

-Assist with tracking actual fees against outside counsel contract costs and alert management in advance of discrepancy;

-Prepare position letters for EEOC and NLRB charges, interview management witnesses, collect documents and organize as needed;

-Conduct research for discrete legal issues.  Draft explanatory notes for HR and/or management about new laws and regulations;

-Support employment counsel and outside counsel by identifying witnesses, and locating and organizing documents needed for claims and litigation;

-Create reports from matter management system; assist in completing/updating Major Matter Report;
-Request checks for settlements and work with service center and others as required to secure checks;

-Maintain legal holds for employment cases;

-Assist in prompt communication and coordination of legal matters within North America, and help ensure timely, accurate and constructive legal advice and support to our business partners;

-Participate in department initiatives and projects, as needed.

Minimum Requirements:
-Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 3 years’ experience in a corporate law department or law firm environment.
-PG experience preferred.

-Strong oral and written communication skills as well as good negotiation and problem solving skills.

-Detail orientation.

-Ability to work independently.

-Document and fact investigation skills.

-Strong organizational skills.

-Ability to cope under stressful situations and meet deadlines.

-Capacity to make sound decisions on short notice.

-Experience with state and federal regulatory agencies, including the US EEOC, NLRB and US Department of Labor preferred.

-Experience with preparing and administering contracts, working on employment administrative claims and/or litigation, and/or summarizing regulatory materials also preferred.
