About the Course

Developed as the result of a partnership between the International School of Hospitality and Tourism Management and the Wyndham Hotel Group’s School of Hospitality Operations, this online certificate course highlights and introduces the principles and concepts employed in the accounting, forecasting, and budgetary areas of a hospitality business.

This introductory financial management course is intended for owners, operators, or managers of hotels who wish to expand their knowledge and expertise in financial areas.

Students will focus on assessing financial information to increase understanding, knowledge, and skills throughout the financial managerial decision making process. The course contains seven instructional units. Topics covered include:

  • Managing a Balance Sheet
  • Preparing a Statement of Cash Flows
  • Cost Accounting / Breakeven Analysis
  •  Forecasting Revenues and Expenses
  •  Preparing an Operations Budget
  • Inventory Management
  • Applying for a Loan / Tax Policies

This is an 8-week certificate course. A certificate worth 8 CEU’s (“Continuing Education Units”) will be awarded to students upon successful completion.

The entire course is administered completely asynchronously and online. Each instructional unit is one week in length. Students will be able to participate and complete assignments for instructional units on a flexible, week-long schedule.



The course was developed and is currently taught by Prof. Erick Lorenzana. Prof. Lorenzana has over 15 years of experience in the hospitality industry. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree from Florida International University and a Master of Management in Hospitality (MMH) from the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University. In 2010, he was awarded Marriott’s Leadership Excellence Special Award.
