Italian Film and Culture from Fascism to the XXI Century
Course description: Through a variety of films, music, art, and historical accounts, this course surveys contemporary Italian social, political, and cultural life from the fall of Fascism to the present. Among the topics examined will be the Resistance and the post-World War II Reconstruction, the “Economic Boom” of the 50’s and 60’s, the Social Protests, Terrorism, Immigration, and the Berlusconi years.
A short lecture by the Instructor will give background material, the historical, political, and cultural background of each main topic. Films will be discussed in class the day after the viewing, before watching a new film.
Reading assignments are to be prepared by the students before class time.
Class meets 3 hours a day, from 4 to 7. Attendance is mandatory.
